The short version

  1. Open your deck. Press Present.
  2. The stage opens in its own window. Drag it to the projector. Press F.
  3. This tab becomes your console: notes, next slide, the clock, the room.
  4. Press the right arrow. Every phone follows.

One screen only? Use the stage window and press N for your notes.

Every slide has two sides

What it is
ScreenWhat the projector shows.
PhonesWhat every phone shows while the slide is up.

Phones can show:

Phones seeUse it for
Look upThe default. Eyes back on you.
A questionPoll, quiz, rating, word cloud, open question, their name, number, Q&A, photo, voice note, sign-up.
Something to seeWords, a picture, buttons, links, a follow card, a download.
The slide itselfThe back row, and anybody who cannot see the screen.
Live resultsThe answers to a question, on every phone.
Your own (HTML)Anything you or your AI can build.

A question slide is one click: + between slides, then Poll. The screen shows the answers live. Phones show the question.

Decks with animations

A PDF is still pages. When the builds and transitions matter, bring the deck in a way that keeps them:

  • Keynote: File, Export To, HTML. Drop the folder it makes (or a zip of it) on Joocy. Apple's own player runs it inside Joocy, so every build and transition plays exactly as you made it, on your clicks. Phones follow slide by slide, and you can put questions between its slides.
  • PowerPoint or Google Slides, on a Mac: open the deck in Keynote (for Google Slides, File, Download, PowerPoint first), then export HTML as above. Keynote turns most animations into builds.
  • Any app that exports a video (PowerPoint: File, Export, Create a Video; Keynote: File, Export To, Movie): drop the video on Joocy. It watches it, finds every moment the picture holds still before moving again (where you would have clicked), and makes each part between two of those a slide. So a video deck works like any other: a thumbnail per part in the console strip (click one to go there), notes per part, and questions between any two parts. On the big screen it still plays as one video, with nothing reloading between parts.
  • One press forward plays the next part, exactly as exported.
  • Back, a thumbnail or a jump shows how that part ends.
  • To play a part again, go one back, then forward.

A video added to a deck you already have stays one slide. On its slide, press Find the pauses for me (check them by playing it through; add or remove any), then Make each part a slide.

Questions that depend on who answers

Ask what people do first ("Photographer, planner, filmmaker?"). Then:

  • Split the answers by it. On a results slide, Split by an earlier answer draws one group per answer: the room's moods in a column per profession, what each profession charges, tea or coffee by profession.
  • Ask only some people. On the Phones tab, Who sees this, then Only some people: pick the question and the answers. Choose what everybody else sees (look up, or another question). A follow up just for the photographers, while everybody else answers something of their own.
  • Use their own words. Under a question, a card's words or the look-up line, Make it personal puts in what each person answered earlier: "{craft|Friends}, how was your year?" reads "Photographer, how was your year?" on a photographer's phone, and "Friends, ..." on the big screen.
  • Use their name. The Name chip adds {name|friend}: "Hi Asha" on Asha's phone. To make sure everybody has one, either set Room, Ask for names, to When they join, or ask Their name as a question (a tile like Poll or Quiz). Its answer becomes their name on the leaderboard and in Q&A, and the big screen can show the names arriving.

The console

  • Back and Next, big.
  • The slide on screen now, playing as the room sees it (builds, video).
  • Notes, big. A A changes the size.
  • Next slide, so nothing surprises you.
  • Every slide in a strip along the bottom. Click one to go straight there.
  • The clock. Click to start or pause. Double click to reset.
  • Who is here: in the room now, and everybody who joined.
  • The live panel for the question on screen:
  • Reveal or Hide the answers.
  • Stop answers when you are ready to move on.
  • Clear answers to ask again.
  • Approve or hide photos, voice notes, words and questions.
  • Put one question from the room big on screen.
  • Play a voice note through the stage's speakers.

Keeping the room safe

Nothing from the room reaches the screen that you would not want there.

  • Swear words and slurs wait for you. A word, a question, a name or an answer from your own phone screen with one (English and Hinglish) is filtered, like a photo waits. The live panel says "Filtered: needs your OK". Show puts it up; otherwise it stays hidden.
  • A filtered name shows as "Guest 12" on the screen until you show it. More, Names in the room lists every name, the filtered ones first: Show, Hide, or Remove. A flag beside the headcount tells you when one is waiting.
  • Remove person (on anything they sent, or in Names) takes everything they sent off the screen and out of the results, and lets their phone go. They cannot come back as themselves.
  • More, Pause answers: nothing new comes in, not even reactions, and phones say so. Tap the Answers paused flag to let answers in again.
  • More, Close the room to new people: nobody new gets in, and everybody already in can still come back. Tap Room closed to open it.
  • Photos and voice notes wait for your approval by default. The question's own switch, I approve each one before it is shown, turns that off.
  • In the room settings, under Words: Filter bad words (on), and Also filter these words for your own list: a rival's name, a nickname. Each open question, Q&A and custom question has its own Filter bad words switch too, on by default. Its answers are filtered only while both are on. Your own list is filtered either way.

Your phone as the clicker

Console, More, Use your phone as a remote. Scan it. Your phone becomes Back, Next and your notes. No sign-in needed on the phone.

  • The code works once, for three minutes, then it is spent. If it shows on the big screen, a moment later it is useless.
  • When a phone pairs, the console says so. If it was not yours, you know.
  • The same dialog lists every paired phone. Remove ends one at once.

A second screen

Console, More, Open on a second screen. That link shows the slides on any other computer or TV, and cannot change anything.

The join code

  • On the Join slide: big, with the headcount.
  • In the corner of every slide that asks something, so latecomers can scan. Change this in Room, Join code in the corner.
  • J puts it over everything, any time.
  • Your personal link always works too: your-site/@yourname. Put it on a poster. It opens whatever you are presenting, and waits if you have not started.

Before the room arrives

  1. Do one full run-through with a phone in your hand.
  2. Console, More, Start fresh: clear every answer. Phones stay joined; their answers go.
  3. Check the projector machine is not muted. Sounds are made in the browser, and a browser makes no sound until a key is pressed, so press one.

A new audience, same deck

Editor, ..., Start fresh for a new audience. A new session, a new code, and last night's answers stay in last night's session.

Afterwards

Deck, ..., What the room said. Every session, every answer. Download a spreadsheet, everything as JSON, or all the photos. Your AI can read them too.

When something goes wrong

Phones are not following. Look at the dot in the stage's corner. Amber means reconnecting. Keep going: your slides still move, and phones catch up when the line is back.

The venue wifi blocks the live connection. Phones notice and switch to a slower, plain way of asking. Nobody has to do anything.

No internet at the venue at all. Run the room on your own computer: Offline mode.

The stage window did not open. The browser blocked it. The console shows Open the stage.

You closed the stage by mistake. Console, More, Open the stage window. It picks up where you were.

A typo on a slide, mid-talk. Fix it in the editor. The stage updates while you watch.

Everything is wrong. Reload the stage. It rejoins the room exactly where it was.
